…Prevent bromate in my bottled water

Many natural waters contain bromide as a naturally occurring chemical species, which is not harmful. However, ozone is used to disinfect the water a reaction occurs which changes the bromide species into bromate.

Bromate has been declared a carcinogenic species and many countries now impose strict limits on the amount of bromate that is allowed in bottled water and other beverages. The limits has been reduced to as low as 10 parts per billion (0.0000001%).

The amount of bromate formed will depend on the bromide level in the source water and the amount of ozone used. However bromate formation can be avoided completely by the use of Aquionics UV disinfection systems, which can totally eliminate the need for ozone. back to top

Activated carbon filter beds are often used to treat incoming town water to remove chlorine which has been added by the town water supplier.

Although activated carbon is an efficient removal method for chlorine, there are issues that can affect it suitability. Carbon beds need maintenance such as back washing, cleaning, and replacement at regular intervals. Carbon can also form an attractive environment for bacteria to breed.

…Reduce TOC in my Ultra-pure Water

Ultrapure waters required for use in pharmaceutical, health care, and microelectronics markets require very low levels of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), which can have a damaging effect in the end products.

Many feed waters, whether derived from municipal supplies, ground waters, boreholes, or rivers and  lakes will have relatively high levels of TOC that will require several stages of treatment to reduce to required levels.

…Treat ballast water for IMO BWT regulations

When a ship de-ballasts, it is discharging into the local environment thousands of tons of sea water which was picked up in another location, often from another continent. During this process all of the species of organisms that are living in the sea at the point the ballast was picked up, are introduced into the environment at the point of discharge. This introduction of alien species can have an enormous environmental impact as the alien species invade and disrupt the local environment.

In order to mitigate against this, IMO regulations are being implemented that will require ships to treat ballast water to remove organisms from the water and prevent introduction of alien species.

Many technologies have been proposed for this, but most use chemicals or complicated and space-consuming equipment.
