Aquionics’ new SwimLine™ UV range provides safe and efficient disinfection of pool water while removing harmful chloramines. Powered by technology from aquatics disinfection expert Hanovia, the SwimLine incurs lower capital and operating costs than comparable UV systems.

The SwimLine simultaneously disinfects while improving water quality for swimmers. Water passing through the system is exposed to UV light, which destroys microorganisms on a cellular level. When coupled with chlorine treatment, SwimLine provides a highly effective second barrier against infection by chlorine-resistant microorganisms such as cryptosporidium. UV light also destroys chloramines, the harmful byproduct of chlorine disinfection responsible for strong odors, skin and eye irritation, and damage to pool equipment.

The SwimLine contains features designed to reduce operating costs by eliminating wasted power and materials. Power Stepping™ technology is included as standard, and allows facilities to cut power consumption by limiting operation to only what is needed to maintain the required disinfection level. The system’s controller provides continuous UV monitoring to alert for low UV, power failures or other changes. An input is also available to allow connection to a chemical controller, further reducing total operating costs.

The Hanovia UVlux™ broad spectrum UV lamps used in the SwimLine range feature the latest technology in medium pressure lamps and optimal efficiency. The system also incorporates an automatic quartz sleeve wiping system that reduces maintenance and extends lamp life.

The compact SwimLine is available in a range of u-shaped and in-line configurations for easy installation in new builds, or incorporation into existing water treatment systems. All models in the product range have passed rigorous 3rd party validations to meet NSF standards and exceed USEPA disinfection guidelines.

The UV-Pearl offers highly efficient disinfection for the pharmaceutical and health care industry using a mercury free design for flows lower than 5 gpm. The UV-Pearl is easily integrated into OEM devices, ultrapure water generation, process water loops, laboratory research equipment and washing/rinsing machines. The system’s UV-LED disinfection technology activates instantly to begin treatment and can easily operate in no flow conditions if needed. On/off cycles have no effect on system operation. Erlanger, Ky. (February 13, 2012) – The new Jaz clamp spectrometer from Aquionics enables customers to conduct on-location testing of their UV disinfection system’s quartz sleeves. The Jaz accurately validates the life of quartz sleeves, potentially extending their usable life, and ensures UV disinfection systems are operating effectively.

The Jaz spectrometer’s special adapter clamps onto a UV disinfection system quartz sleeve, utilizing fiber optics to transmit UV light between 200-400 nm. By measuring the transmittance of light through the quartz sleeve, customers can verify the proper construction of new quartz sleeves and assess the level of fouling and/or solarization of used sleeves.

The Jaz clamp spectrometer is lightweight and compact, with 1,500 hours of lamp life powered by a convenient battery or A/C plug adapter. A USB port allows data transfer to PC for data storage and analysis.

Erlanger, Kentucky (November 18, 2011) – The Aquionics Photon PMD range of UV disinfection systems now further reduces pool operating and maintenance costs with its new Power Switching feature.

Photon PMD disinfection systems were developed for use in swimming pools, water parks and other aquatic leisure facilities. Photon units use UV lights to destroy chloramines, which develop in all swimming pools and cause unpleasant odors, skin and eye irritation and can damage steel structures in surrounding enclosures. Pools using a UV disinfection system also require lower chlorine levels to maintain cleanliness, reducing operating costs for management.

Aquionics’ Photon PMD systems offer the new Power Switching feature, allowing users to automate the UV disinfection process. The new feature continuously monitors the water and maintains a predetermined UV dosage (for disinfection or chloramine control) regardless of bather load or water quality. By reducing unit activity to an as-needed basis, Power Switching extends lamp life and reduces energy usage.

Erlanger, Kentucky (October 5, 2011) – UV disinfection specialist Aquionics and LED expert Dot Metrics Technologies presented the results of their innovative UV LED based reactor design at the North American IUVA Conference (Toronto, ON). The results proved their UV LED disinfection system to be five times more efficient than conventional disinfection systems.

The results were obtained from studies conducted by University of North Carolina (Charlotte, N.C.) and University of Colorado (Boulder, Colo.). They show more than a 3 log reduction of E. coli at an optical power efficiency exceeding 10 gpm/ Watt. Conventional mercury based UV systems have yet to break the 2 gpm/ Watt peak performance level.

UV LEDs have proven effective in applications where UV disinfection was previously thought impossible. The process is mercury free, activated and deactivated in only nine nanoseconds, and operates using low voltage sources. Such benefits are a vast improvement over conventional disinfection methods, and make the new system prime for market adoption.

Aquionics and Dot Metrics Technologies anticipate the first in a series of products built around this new technology to be available in early 2012.

The Aquionics InLine+ C and OpenLine UV Disinfection Systems.

Aquionics’ InLine+ C is a medium pressure, closed vessel UV disinfection system. Its single-ended chamber design relocates all system components to one side of the vessel, allowing it to be installed against a wall, floor or other tight fitting space.

The OpenLine is a stainless steel open channel UV system that uses amalgam lamp technology to kill harmful microorganisms in water. Eight models are available with the largest handling flow rates up to 1 million gallons per day. Systems utilizing an open channel concrete design are available for larger flows.

Both products feature simple installation, and virtually maintenance-free operation with a standard automatic quartz sleeve wiping system, variable power ballast output and 3rd party validations for conformance to USEPA drinking water guidelines, NWRI reuse guidelines and NSF approval.

In addition, Aquionics will be giving a presentation entitled “Open Channel vs. Closed Channel for Wastewater: Cost Comparison,” at the show on October 18 at 10:30 a.m. The presentation compares the two technologies for use in the wastewater industry by providing real life data on capital cost, operation and maintenance, and installation cost from previous projects.

Erlanger, Kentucky (July 25, 2011) – UV disinfection specialist Aquionics has signed a Joint Development Agreement with LED expert Dot Metrics Technologies (Charlotte, N.C.) to develop a new line of UV-LED disinfection products. The agreement formalizes several months of working together to bring new disinfection systems to the market.

Dot Metrics is a small company associated with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It focuses on UV LED systems development for disinfection of water, air and surfaces. For several years, Dot Metrics has been testing and discovering new applications for UV LEDs.

UV treatment of fluids is replacing traditional chemical treatment in many applications, however it still has a number of drawbacks. UV LEDs overcome almost all the problems associated with standard, mercury-based UV disinfection.

“The joint development effort between Dot Metrics and Aquionics is a great example of a successful collaboration. Dot Metrics brings innovative UV LED expertise and Aquionics contributes its experience and resources to rapidly commercialize the technology and provide access to key markets,” said Dot Metrics President and CEO, Rosanna Stokes. “In addition, access to technology from Aquionics’ sister companies within the water and photonics industries provides a strong basis for a long term relationship. The combined results of our efforts will provide a novel, small footprint, non-mercury based UV disinfection system in the market.”
