The American Water Works Association (AWWA) and International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) working group has released a new communication related to low wavelength, medium pressure disinfection. Current users of Aquionics UV systems have found that their equipment is already in compliance, while other municipalities have selected Aquionics to help them avoid the uncertainty factors to account for low UV wavelengths.

According to the document, state legislators and engineers are now recommending the application of a correction factor for municipal drinking water medium-pressure UV systems to compensate for the effects of wavelengths less than 240nm. Pathogen surrogates used for testing have proven to react differently than actual target pathogens to these low wavelengths. Therefore, previous validation testing and modeling may have overestimated inactivation of harmful target pathogens. While Aquionics systems have always blocked wavelengths less than 240nm with the use of type 240 quartz sleeves, users of similar medium pressure systems not in compliance will be required to re-evaluate system sizing and possibly make costly modifications or purchase new equipment.

Since the Low Wavelength Document was published, Aquionics has won a number of new medium pressure UV system projects where owners are adding UV treatment for disinfection of cryptosporidium and giardia. In the past few months, the communities of Ronan, Montana; Bar Harbor, Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor (Maine); as well as the Canadian Forces Base Suffield (Alberta, Canada) have purchased InLine+ systems from Aquionics.

The InLine+ is a medium pressure, closed vessel UV disinfection system. It features simple installation and virtually maintenance-free operation with a standard automatic quartz sleeve wiping system, variable power ballast output and 3rd party validations for conformance to USEPA drinking water guidelines, NWRI reuse guidelines and has NSF approval.

UV-Pearl only device to offer UV-C LED technology for low power water treatment

Aquionics’ new UV-Pearl is the world’s first water disinfection system to use UV-C LED technology, allowing instant full intensity on start-up and mercury-free water treatment. The compact system can operate as a standalone unit or be easily integrated into OEM devices, ultrapure water generators, process water loops, medical sterilization equipment and many other point-of-use applications.

The UV-Pearl uses highly efficient UV LED lamps, which emit waves of light in the deep UV spectral (UV-C) range that destroy microorganisms on a cellular level. The LEDs can be tuned to different wavelengths from 240-280 nm, allowing targeting of specific pathogens. The Pearl is capable of producing a UV Dose of 60mJ/cm2 at a flow of 0.5 gpm (1.89 lpm) with only 50mW of optical power. These results were repeated at two independent laboratories using the Bacteriophage MS2 virus as a subject, and represent a significant improvement from UV-C LED research presented over the last decade.

UV-Pearl is capable of withstanding unlimited cycling without lamp degradation. The system is not affected by water temperature and can continue to operate with no flow.

In his new role, Speck has been tasked with growing the company’s presence in the western United States. He will provide product support and technical assistance for existing customers, and educate potential customers about the benefits of UV disinfection.

UV disinfection uses light to destroy microorganisms in water, reducing the cost of chemicals associated with other methods of disinfection. The resulting water is environmentally safe and more gentle on people and equipment than pure chemical disinfection. Aquionics’ UVSwim systems are third party validated and feature Power Stepping™ technology, which adjusts input power as needed for adequate disinfection and efficient energy consumption.

Speck has 23 years of experience in aquatic equipment sales and manufacturing. Most recently, he was Aquatics National Sales Manager for Siemens AG, where he handled sales of UV systems and controllers. Speck holds a degree from the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, Calif.) and has completed CPO (Certified Pool and Spa Operator) and UV certification.

Simple intelligent control software allows facilities to access information on system performance and customize operating parameters to work with plant controls. A Power Stepping feature regulates power to the lamps, adjusting input power as needed for adequate disinfection and efficient power consumption. All systems have been third-party validated and treat a wide range of flows and water quality.

UV disinfection system products team members against waterborne pathogens

Erlanger, Ky. (August 6, 2012) – Aquionics UV disinfection equipment has helped the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) in Charlotte, North Carolina, promote safe training conditions for the 2012 U.S. Slalom Canoe and Kayak Team.

The U.S. National Whitewater Center, the training facility for the 2012 U.S. Team, is the world’s largest man-made whitewater river designed with a recirculating water supply. In 2006, it was mandated by the state of North Carolina to provide some type of barrier against pathogens in the water that might come into contact with team members. The USNWC evaluated disinfection products, including chemical disinfectants. The Aquionics system was selected based on its small footprint, easy installation and low maintenance costs.

The USNWC purchased an InLine 18000+ UV disinfection system. Water passing through the Inline 18000+ is exposed to UV light from 18 medium pressure amalgam lamps, which eliminate microorganisms on a cellular level. The system has 20” inlet/ outlet flanges and is equipped with an automatic quartz sleeve cleaning system and UV intensity sensor to ensure proper UV dosage.

“Aquionics’ InLine system helps us maintain a safe training environment without maintenance,” said Jeff Wise, Executive Director of the USNWC.

The UVSwim simultaneously disinfects while improving water quality for swimmers. Water passing through the system is exposed to UV light, which destroys microorganisms on a cellular level. When coupled with chlorine treatment, UVSwim provides a highly effective second barrier against infection by chlorine-resistant microorganisms such as cryptosporidium. UV light also destroys chloramines, the harmful byproduct of chlorine disinfection responsible for strong odors, skin and eye irritation, and damage to pool equipment.

The UVSwim contains features designed to reduce operating costs by eliminating wasted power and materials. Power Stepping™ technology is included as standard, and allows facilities to cut power consumption by limiting operation to only what is needed to maintain the required disinfection level. The system’s controller provides continuous UV monitoring to alert for low UV, power failures or other changes. An input is also available to allow connection to a chemical controller, further reducing total operating costs.

The Hanovia UVlux™ broad spectrum UV lamps used in the UVSwim range feature the latest technology in medium pressure lamps and optimal efficiency. The system also incorporates an automatic quartz sleeve wiping system that reduces maintenance and extends lamp life.

The compact UVSwim is available in a range of u-shaped and in-line configurations for easy installation in new builds, or incorporation into existing water treatment systems. All models in the product range have passed rigorous 3rd party validations to meet NSF standards and exceed USEPA disinfection guidelines.
